Chemical bund lining solutions protect the concrete surfaces of containment structures in industrial and commercial sites to help minimise contamination, damage and risk. It is an important part of a holistic approach to chemical management and demonstrates a company’s commitment to responsible site practices.

Traditional concrete, brick and mortar based bunds have their limitations; they are porous, brittle and are prone to degradation which in turn allows for ingress of chemicals into the structure and consequently the release of harmful chemicals into the surrounding environment. The use of chemical resistant lining systems and protective coatings for the concrete substrates of the bund, incorporating a suitable mastic or sealant to stop water ingress, can significantly extend the life of the bund and improve the overall performance of the containment structure.

Sealing Safety: Exploring Effective Chemical Bund Lining Solutions

Stonhard were employed by Envirowales to design and implement a heavy duty GRP (fibreglass) chemical resistant bund lining solution at their Lead Acid Battery Recycling Plant in Ebbw Vale, South Wales. The plant was leaking and in danger of breaching Environment Agency pollution guidelines which could potentially result in substantial fines.

A GRP lining system based on vinyl ester resins is ideal for aggressive chemical environments and provides seamless, chemical and temperature stable barriers optimized to protect the bund walls and surface, thereby ensuring regulatory compliance. The lining system is also designed for spray application and is quick curing, enabling the work to be completed quickly and efficiently. A cove detail was installed at the floor wall interface to isolate this potential point of movement within the lining and a damp tolerant epoxy primer was applied, using Remmers Epoxy MT100, to ensure good adhesion.
